A mosaic of American life woven through a series of poignant vignettes. Nice Iranian girl Nellie faces an ugly dilemma when her father threatens to take her out of school and back home where nice girls either get good grades or get married. Meanwhile, a young black man falls in with bad characters who rob a bank and kill the guard in the process. Nellie has seen the killer but hesitates to point him out, and the detective investigating the killings has fallen for the mother of the young man whose cooperation is crucial in capturing the bad guy. Through chance, human action, and past history an eclectic cast of characters weaves and warps through each other's lives on a random Washington, D.C. week, building an unforgettable climax.

Synopsis: In Washington D.C., MELVIN (20s) and several teenagers, including TYRONE and LAMONT, rob a bank. Meanwhile, Iranian-born college student NELLIE and her Iranian-American boyfriend RON drive to a D.C. protest of Iranian politics.
DETECTIVE SHERMAN BROWN investigates the robbery.
Nellie and Ron stop at a liquor store. Nellie sees Melvin holding a gun on the store’s owner. Nellie and Melvin catch eyes; she runs as Melvin shoots the owner.
Nellie and Ron party with their friends. After confessing to Ron that she’s a virgin, the two of them have sex. The next morning, Nellie’s friend MONI encourages her to marry Ron; then Nellie would have a Green Card.
Brown arrives at Tyrone’s house with the intention of questioning him. Instead, he talks to Tyrone’s mother and informs her that Tyrone was part of the bank robbery.
After learning that Nellie’s father wants her to return to Iran, Ron asks Nellie to marry him. She accepts.
After spending the night on the street, Tyrone is taken to the police station by cops. Brown questions Tyrone. He encourages him to turn in Melvin in exchange for a lighter sentence.
Nellie visits the police station. Brown asks her to look at a police lineup in an attempt to find who shot the liquor store owner. Nellie recognizes Melvin but is too scared to point him out. He then sees a psychiatrist to discuss this.
A fellow student flirts with Nellie and kisses her. Meanwhile, at a party, Ron and Moni kiss and have sex. At a welcome party for Nellie’s father, Nellie senses that something may have gone on between Ron and Moni. Nellie’s father encourages Nellie to give Ron a chance to make amends.
Brown discovers that Melvin has killed Lamont. A battle between police and Melvin ensues, leaving one fatality.
